Why UPVC windows are popular? Are they good for my home and conservatory? Are there enough UPVC conservatory suppliers to get a good quote?

Answer: UPVC windows are some of the most popular types of windows on the market today because of the many benefits that they have.

Replacing your current home or conservatory windows with replacement UPVC ones not only improves the look of your house, but with the host of extra advantages that they bring, you get to save a lot of money and effort in the future.

UPVC windows are incredible value for money. They are extremely durable, and most will last you a lifetime. They are also very cost-efficient in terms of insulation because they keep warmth in, meaning that your heating bills should go down substantially once you have them installed.

PVC is known for its flame retardant properties because of its chlorine base, so it will never catch fire easily. Additionally, they are good for the environment in more ways than one.

For one thing, they are manufactured from renewable resources because the materials needed to make PVC come from salt. They are recyclable as well now, which is an added benefit.

One of the biggest advantages of these windows is that they are very easy to maintain. You have to clean them of course, but they don’t have to be painted or polished regularly to keep them looking good.

These windows are also very strong so there is a security feature ingrained as they are extremely difficult to break through. Last but not least, they come in a huge selection of colors and styles now.

Some of the very best conservatory suppliers are the people to go to if you want to buy quality windows. UPVC conservatory systems are the rage now simply because of all the same benefits that you get from these windows, and you can bank on the fact that they will not only offer you high performance windows, but also a guarantee on the least number of years you can expect them to last without any problems.

Quick Tips for Suppliers to Install

Double glazed windows are cost efficient and come in a variety of designs, styles and types. Just choose them in the right colors, keeping your existing setting in mind.

Question: Should I install double glazed windows in my home? What are the different types available for me to make a choice?

Answer: These are a fantastic windows, cost-efficient way to make your home look and feel beautiful. They are separated by argon gas to maximize thermal efficiency by keeping warmth in and noise out.

There are many different types of double glazed windows available on the market. Casement windows are one of the most popular kinds. Their versatile design means that you can have top opening fanlights and side opening casements in combination with fixed panes.

Their classic design means that they will suit any type of house, regardless of the style. No matter if your conservatory shows Georgian windows or an ultramodern design, the dual turn window is another option for you to consider.

Not only are they lovely, but they are ultra practical because their sashes swing around completely, meaning that you can clean the outside surfaces from inside the house.

You don’t have to hire a window cleaner to do the job, or try clambering up a ladder yourself. In the same vein, there are the sliding sash windows.

typical tilt and turn windows

They are perfect if used on older looking houses because of the elegance they bring. They are easy to open with their smooth, gliding factor because of the precision with which they are engineered. Plus, they tilt inwards so that cleaning them is never an inconvenience.

If you are looking to make the maintenance of your windows simple, then you should go for the tilt and turn ones. Their name comes from the handle that is attached to the windows which is tilted and then turned to open the windows to a certain extent, which allows good ventilation. You can also turn the handle to pull them inwards to clean without any associated hassle.

You can also get fully reversible windows which are designed to complement all modern homes. These windows swing around all the way so that cleaning isn’t a problem either.

When installing any of the windows, it is important that you choose them in a color that suits your home, and the furniture and settings inside. You can go for rosewood, oak, white, or combine the colors like rosewood on white or oak on white.

You can find good double glazing suppliers by getting quotes from three or four different companies and comparing the features and benefits they offer, along with the price.

Additionally, check out showrooms or see previous works of all double glazing suppliers before you make a decision, so you know you are getting the best deal.

I am really interested in having a conservatory built on my property. I have acquired specific information about planning permission and other stuff. However, before I go any further with building, I want to know more about the best way of making my conservatory stand out from the crowd. Do you have a good option for this?

If you have a conservatory on your property, there is no doubt that it probably looks absolutely stunning and really enhances the look of your house as well.

While conservatories look beautiful just on their own, if you add a little extra décor then they will come across as something really special. An easy way to do this is by adding some blinds, including conservatory roof blinds.

This way not only do you complete the look of your home addition and give it the loving touch, but also make it seem a lot less daunting at night when the darkness seems to be crawling in.

thanks to tudorrose1993′s at flickr for this wonderful photo

Many companies will offer their customers made-to-measure blinds in a wide selection of styles, and most will offer something that will suit all budgets.

There are several types of blinds that you can choose from. One kind is the pleated blinds. They are very popular because not only do they give a very clean-cut, neat fit but are also excellent value for money.

They are usually made up of insulated fabric which will keep the cold out and warmth in. If you are buying shaped pleated roof blinds, rest assured they are a good choice. This is because they have fabric control cording; this holds in the proper shape whether they are open or closed.

Pinoleum blinds are another great way to decorate your conservatory. No matter what kind of furniture you keep in it, these blinds will offset them brilliantly.

For the most part they are made from actual wood and threaded with acrylic braid which results in very durable blinds.

They are excellent for lowering heat loss and will let only some controlled light filter through to create a wonderful, warm effect. In a similar fashion are the roman blinds but they are made from fabric and will afford you more privacy at night.

If you are ready to splash out some money on technology and the look of luxury, then you have the option of going for remote control blinds.

Not only are they a great deal of fun to use, but are always made to your exact specifications with no corners cut. Coming with their own handset, these blinds will probably keep you playing in your conservatory all day long.

I am having issues selecting windows for my newly built conservatory. I’ve heard Georgian windows go well with most types of homes. Please help me make a right decision.

When getting your conservatory built, one big aspect of it is the type of windows that you will be getting installed for it. The kind of conservatory windows you get will form a big part of the outlook of your conservatory and therefore, it is essential that you get this decision right.

Of course everybody has different tastes and will probably differ in what they think will suit any particular style of conservatory. However if you are getting a very traditional looking conservatory built, then one place you absolutely won’t go wrong is with Georgian windows.

As any of your conservatory suppliers will tell you, Georgian windows will bring a beautiful, classic look to any home especially a period home, like few things will. They get their name from the fact that the style of these windows is inspired by the architecture that was prevalent in the 18th century; the Georgian era.

At that time, windows used to be made out of wood; specifically timber constructed, and were made only in the style known as sash with standardized panes of glass pieces which in turn were divided up by thin wooden bars.

These were quite delicate in nature. The good thing is that for anyone who appreciates the Georgian look can now get Georgian windows installed with two benefits; they will be built using the latest technology and at the same time deliver the beautiful look of a long ago time.

If you do some careful research on the internet, you are sure to come across a number of reputable companies that will produce Georgian windows to your specifications, and offer you a number of extra bonuses in the process.

The best companies will give you a finished product that has adhered to the standards set down by ISO 9001, and will also probably give you at least a ten year guarantee on what you are buying.

Other companies will let you give your own input when the windows are being constructed, like which type of finish you would prefer and what style would suit your home.

Many companies also give their customers a promise of their windows being virtually maintenance free, which is a huge plus point considering that it will save you a lot of money over the years.

These can be some questions about conservatories. Do you think it is a good idea to have conservatory build on your premises? I’ve heard it is tricky to choose the best conservatory windows, what do you have to say about it? Let us explain an review about some good options as well.

Conservatories can be a beautiful addition to any house, and if you plan out its construction with careful detail, then you potentially have a work of art on your premises. What completes the look of your conservatory is the style of conservatory windows that you have installed.

Sample of a Georgian bay window

Georgian windows are a great option if you have a period home, and will give the house a classic look.

On the other hand, UPVC windows are suitable for any type of home, especially because they are available in a variety of finishes. The benefit of this is that no matter what type of decor and furniture you have inside, the windows can be given a finish that will complement them perfectly.

It always gives an unbelievably elegant touch to your house and a certain charm to it when your windows and décor match. For example, you can get finishes done in oak, beech, mahogany, white wood-grain and rosewood.

If your furniture is mostly mahogany and you get mahogany finished windows installed, then all you have to do is add a couple of muted oil paintings, a furry rug and a big fireplace to give your home a quaintness and element of coziness the way few other things can do.

You can enhance the look of your home even more by adding a good looking glazing style for your windows. You have such a wide selection from which to choose from that you are really spilt for choice.

Some of the more popular styles are the Leaded Diamond and Leaded Square. Others that you can opt for include cottage bars and Georgian bars.

Photo of section of the white sample of PVC of a window

Whatever style you do get for your house, just be sure to get double glazed windows. UPVC windows are fantastic on their own, but add the element of double glazing and you get a number of added advantages. The cold is kept out, and the warmth of your house stays put.

This helps you to cut down on your bills as well. In connection to this, you also benefit from soundproofing.

There is nothing as bad as horrible noises coming in when you are trying to relax. With UPVC double glazed windows you no longer have to worry about such an occurrence.

Just be sure to have them installed by reputable double glazing suppliers.

Adding a sunroom, or, if you already have one, making it into a year round place of enjoyment by installing air-conditioning is a great way to make it into a more enjoyable living space. You must not underestimate the rise of temperature in your sunroom during summer months.

If you live in a part of the country where summer temperature rises above 20C it is essential to consider making arrangements to keep your sunroom temperature at a comfortable level. There are several approaches to keeping your sunroom cool and comfortable though some may be more expensive than others.

Air-conditioning will allow you to enjoy your sunroom during all seasons of the year under any weather condition.

Among several options available for cooling your sunroom, one is the central air-conditioning system. These systems are manufactured to locate the condensing coils along with the compressor and fan outside the house for transferring indoor heat to the outside air. The cooling part of the equipment which consists of the evaporating coils that absorb the heat from the indoor air for cooling it are usually placed inside the house furnace. The furnace blows indoor air over the coils, which is cooled as it passes over the coils, and is then routed throughout the house via interconnected ducts to cool the entire house.

When your sunroom is attached to your home that has a central air-conditioning system it is easy for you to tap directly into the system for extending your home’s air-conditioning to your sunroom also. You can do this by extending the house ducting into the sunroom to allow the sunroom attain the same temperature as other parts of the house. For maintaining a temperature at a different rate from the house in your sunroom you can have a separate thermostat and valve combination installed in the central air-conditioning system.

In order to use your home’s central air-conditioning system you will need to make sure that the system is powerful enough to sustain the additional load that cooling the sunroom will create. You will also need to install more duct fans that can help blow the cool air into the sunroom.

air conditioner unit isolated

If you wish have better direct control over the cooling in your sunroom you can opt for installing independent air-conditioning units that will cater exclusively to sunroom cooling. A window mounted electrical air-conditioner will work very well. Being a portable unit you can install it in any convenient window location of the sunroom. The other alternative is to go for a ductless mini split air-conditioning unit.

Similar to central air-conditioning systems the mini-split units have two main components. One is the outdoor condenser/compressor and the other is the indoor evaporator or cooling unit. Both the indoor and outdoor units are connected through a conduit, which houses the refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, a condensate drain and the power cable.

These units are a good choice when a sunroom is added to the house at a later date. It simplifies the work by eliminating the construction of additional ducting required to connect the sunroom to the central system if there is one. More over, it occupies little space in the sunroom as the small indoor unit can be installed anywhere on the sunroom walls. As the compressor and fan assembly are installed outdoors it provides noiseless cooling.

When you convert your home’s extra outdoor space in to a sunroom, you add class to your home, increase its value, living space area and overall energy efficiency as well. Sunrooms act as passive solar heating systems and are designed to absorb the sun’s heat during the day and radiate the warmth through out your house during cold night hours. Dark colored tiles are used for their ability to absorb heat during the day and gradually give it off in the colder part of the evenings and during the night.

Tiles are also moisture resistant and easy to clean. With proper designing the heat collected in a sunroom can flow to other parts of the house through entryways and connective airflows during the day. Since the air in a sunroom is warmer than that in all other parts of the house, this air can be driven to other rooms for warming them up.

Floor Heating

Conservatory Underfloor Heating - © Floor Heating Ltd

Floor heating is one of the best ways under cold weather situations. Materials such as hardwood, tiles etc. are readily used in the construction of sunroom flooring. One way in which sunroom heating can be accomplished is by installing an undertile heating system. In undertile heating, the heating arrangement is installed directly under the tiles i.e. on top of the screed unlike that of the under floor system where the floor slab itself is heated.

Undertile heating has several advantages over other sunroom heating systems. It mainly warms the floor surface rather than the concrete slab underneath, and therefore consumes much less power for producing sufficient heat. The flooring is warmed up at a much faster rate taking approx. one to one and a half hours as compared to nearly ten hours required in case of ‘in slab’ or ‘under floor’ heating systems.

However, since the installation of sunroom flooring is usually done over old concrete slabs or pre-existing decks it is advisable to consult a qualified flooring professional in order to avoid any issues with peeling, unevenness, cracking etc. at a later stage. It is important for the flooring of the sunroom to be able to withstand many hours of direct sunlight and extreme variations in temperature. For managing power usage efficiently a thermostat is necessary with undertile heating systems. Many manufacturers claim that undertile heating systems cut down power consumption by over 50 percent as compared to conventional floor heating systems.

Hydronic Liquid Floor Heating

If your house has a hydronic liquid floor heating system it is another alternative that you can use for your sunroom. Although a somewhat costly option that may require extensive construction work it will let the home’s heating system work in the sunroom also. Liquid floor heating systems are quite popular in which hot water from a boiler is pumped through tubing laid underneath the floor. The pumped hot water warms up the slab and the slab’s thermal mass absorbs the heat and slowly drives it into the room.

The system offers a high level of comfort, noiseless operation, and improvement in air quality, as there is no dust, toxic or other infiltrations unlike forced-air heating systems that increase the rate of air infiltration. The temperature in the sunroom, like in other parts of the house, is controlled through valves, pumps and thermostats incorporated in the system for regulating the temperature of the water flow in the tubing loops of the hydronic system.

Your sunroom is among the most impressive parts of your house. Installing a security alarm system in the house reduces the chances of a burglary. If the alarm system does not prevent the burglar from breaking in it will definitely reduce his stay, as he will immediately try to make himself scarce once the alarm goes off. Most of these systems operate through a combined arrangement consisting of contacts placed on windows and doors and motion sensors.

    Burglar sunroom breaking in

It is best to have contacts at all exterior points of entry to the house including the sunroom. The contact will be able to sense when doors/windows are opened and activate the system alarm. Glass breaking sensors are also available that will operate the alarm if someone tries to get in by breaking the glass of the sunroom. Motion detectors have their own advantages however they do not detect the presence of an individual until he/she is already inside the house.

Home security systems basically include these elements:

security system console, mounted on a wall, shallow DOF

The control panel – All the wiring of the system terminates at the control panel. The back up battery is also located at this point and in a monitored system this is the place where the phone lines are connected.

Keypad – The keypad is the point from where the system is armed/disarmed.

The Siren – The audible signal heard when the alarm goes off

Inside motion detector- Motion detectors sense human presence inside a room.

Special motion detectors- for pets

Door and/or Window contacts – These contacts function to activate the alarm when any door or window of the house is opened.

A Central Monitoring Station – In a monitored system, when the alarm is set off the control panel transmits a message to the central monitoring station that is manned round the clock. On receiving the message the Central Monitoring Station will first try to contact the owner and then contact the police, fire department and the medics. Generally, there is a monthly fee charged for these services provided by the security company that operates the Central Monitoring Station and with whom the owner of the house has a monitoring contract.

Sunrooms & Home Security Monitoring Systems

In monitored systems when the system senses anything it considers as a security threat it waits for approx 40 to 45 seconds to give sufficient time to the homeowner to deactivate the system if it is a false alarm. When not deactivated within the set timeframe it sends a message to the monitoring company through telephone lines connected to control panel. On receiving the message the monitoring company calls the home to verify the alarm. If no response is received or if a wrong password is provided the company informs the police on which the police respond accordingly.

Unmonitored systems usually have an on-site sound alarm system with or without flashing lights. The system relies on neighbors to call the police if and when they find the alarm activated. Passers by or neighbors are advised never to investigate an alarm on their own. Unmonitored system should preferably have strobe lights also incorporated in the system along with the alarms.

The strobe lights should be located in some ‘difficult to access’ spot on a side street of the house. The siren and flashing lights of the alarm system should be installed on the house from where they can be seen and heard easily.
Security wise your sunroom may be the most important place where you need to ensure placing sensors of your alarm system in addition to other places in the house.

Sunrooms have become the latest home improvement projects for all homeowners today. Everyone wants to add a sunroom to his/her home. Sunrooms are places that add space to a home and add to its value. The major portion of the cost, up to 70%, incurred in construction is paid back as space as the value of the home increases on adding a sunroom. The cost of construction of the sunroom varies according to its size, the locality/area of the home, prevalent labor charges, quality of materials and a host of related factors including sunroom wall insulation requirements.

Two and three season sunrooms cost relatively less than year round or four season sunrooms. This is mainly on account of the superior insulation properties of four season sunrooms. One type of four-season sunroom is made using a wooden frame type enclosure. Here it is possible to install batt roll insulation in the walls. Batt insulation is made from mineral fiber, which is either rock wool or processed fiberglass. It is used as insulation material within walls as also in ceilings and floors. Usually this type of insulation is the least expensive among wall insulating materials. However, it needs to be installed very carefully for giving effective performance. It is best suited for stud spacing of 16/24 inches. Batts are available in standard lengths of 4 or 8 feet and in widths that fit securely between wood framing members. The typical R-value for batts is approx. R3 per inch of batt thickness.

Over batts rigid foam board type of insulation should be installed in the interior walls. These boards are available in several thicknesses and possess high insulating value ranging between R4 to R8 per inch of board thickness. When the sunroom is well insulated it will allow the heating/air-conditioning system in the house to extend also to the sunroom for maintaining high comfort levels.

During sunroom wall insulation it is essential to install two vapor retarders in the wall assembly for best results. You must check with an insulation contractor, architect or heating and air-conditioning contractor or a knowledgeable local person for his opinion whether in your region it is appropriate to install the vapor retarder on interior walls or on the exterior wall. Well-built four season sunroom walls usually comprise of four-inch thick nominal walls for added insulation making them more thermally efficient and more comfortable in the winter.

For three season sunrooms normal insulation or no insulation is used at all because they are intended for use only during summer, spring and fall. As winter usage is by and large excluded, these sunrooms are not designed for being heated and therefore need no arrangements of any sort for heat loss prevention. This drastically cuts down overall expenses that include material and labor costs involved in insulating walls of the sunroom with savings on ceiling and floor insulation costs also. This cost difference between three season and four season sunroom should however be viewed keeping in mind that four season sunrooms have a more utilitarian quality and their cost of usage is much less as they are used for the whole year as against eight to nine months for three season sunrooms. Such a cost comparison will be more realistic.
